Is there a superior macro algae for the refugium, or do they all do the same thing just a different plant. And how fast "should" it grow in the refugium. My macro has been growing for about 18 months and I have never had to prune it, although it has grown to the tank wall. My question arising from recent hair algae bloom that I though would be minimised from the macro eating the excess nutriants.

Many people will say that chaetomorpha is a superior algae for the refugium. How fast it grows depends on light and nutrients for the most part. If you have not trimmed yours in 18 months I would say that you could either use more nutrients (with the hair algae that is probably not the case) or more light (I would go with this bet).
