i added 150 lbs of play sand and a little LS to seed it in my 75g without rinsing it or anything and the tank is still really cloudy with dust after 5 full days. is there anything i can do to clear this thing up or should i keep waiting?

You can run some carbon, and maybe a filter sock or filtering media. Otherwise it will be a few more days.

Gah.....I spent two hours rinsing mine. And it's just about clearing up after four days. Used about half of what your using. I am also tilting my powerheads upward. Enjoy the wait, I am learning that half the fun of salt water hobby is the wait lol.

Enjoy each step of the process.........if you don't, i've just read too many disaster stories on impatient disasters....

i had a powerhead turned on and tilted upward toward the overflow but it seemed like it wasn't helping so i turned it off yesterday should i turn it back on?

At this point a HOB filter will be best. And with both powerheads running to speed it up. Just keep cleaning the filters to help.
Plus you may always have excess debris and the filter will help while it leaves.

is it worth buying a filter? will it really be totally clear in a few more days with no filter? will a filter be of any use in the future for me?

I have on on my 75 gal. And with all the fish activity along with my daimond goby always sand sifting there is always something to collect. And i used all florida LS. Plus the carbon is a great backup. Aslong as they are cleaned regularly and replaced regularly. Also helps reduce ammonia.
And with that unrinsed sand it will take a long time to clear on its own and you will have excess debris for awile.

can you recommend a particular brand or model of filter? also how would i go about implementing carbon?

I have this one but 1 size up. Im sure this size would be fine though. You need to removes the bio wheels. They are nitrate collectors. You need to remove the flat plate at the bottom of the filter that is under the spraybar tube to stop the spraybars from spraying.
They have filter media with carbon on them. just clean weekly or be weekly and replace every few months.

I would use the powerhead to loosen more debris from the SB and then leave it on untill clear. I hope you have two for that tank and what size is the one you have?

i have two koralia 2's but one is in my LR curing tub waiting for the tank to clear to add LR. i also have a Y-spout in middle and a spout on left and ride side flowing back in from the return to increase circulation. i was gonna test the flow after everything is in there with the food flake test to see how far it floats across the tank. might end up adding another powerhead not sure

I use a koralia 2 for spot flow behind LR. Those will not be enough for that 75 gallon.
You need good high end powerheads with flowcontrol and duckbill tips for dirrection control.

Your LR will convert waste into harmless nitrogen and the SB will convert nitrate into harmless nitrogen but without proper flow this wont happen. Those pumps are overpriced and overrated.
Even the #4 isnt enough for you.
