I am not making furniture out of it, but I am attaching my controller, power bar, etc to it. I was wondering what kind of screws to drive into MDF.

I've used drywall screws (fine threaded) without any problems, especially for the attachement you're talking about.

Drywall screws will work best because they have longer flukes (cutting edges). MDF has very little structural integrity, therefore it is easy to strip the screw hole.

Drill a pilot hole, and fill it with carpenters glue before inserting and tightening the screw. As the glue soaks into the MDF and cures, the area around the screw will strengthen and the screw will hold better.

what about if I just need a short screw (don't want to poke through) do I cut the drywall screw?

Can you drill it and get to the other side? If so, a few machine screws and corresponding nuts with lock-washers would be ideal.

is it to attach the mdf to something or something to the mdf. i would use a dry wall screw or self tapping wood screws. i would counter sink them so it is clean and if you ever have to unscrew it will not blister out. if it is to screw it to the mdf i would use like 3/4 wood screws it should hold fine if you tighten it too tight you could have problems but just be careful
