View Full Version : Can one pump do it all?

I have been; thinking, which is a danger in it's self, could I run everything on one pump? One high volume pressure rated pump for the return, the skimmer, calcium reactor and that loop through the chiller and back.
I know if it goes down everything does, but if the power is off they are all down anyway. With gate valves could the pressure and flow be regulated to each device? If you wanted to service one item, shut the valve and undo the union, that doesn't seem to be a problem. What if I wanted to shut the skimmer down at night, ok a control valve hooked to a timer.
Ok, does anyone do this? Or am I just thinking too much?

you are still going to need more pumps, unless you have a huge sump that can handle 4000+gph being pump in and out. Then your overflows have to be able to handle this kind of flow also.
In your 150gal for example you would need about 4000-6000gph just for flow in the tank if you have a reef.....
Now if you had other PHs in the tank or another CL pump it wouldn't be that hard to do.

also, dont forget that pressure does not change with volume. I dang near blew my korallin calcim reactor up using a genX 70 hp pump. I had tapped a quarter inch john guest fitting on the return line (spa flex) with a small valve to control volume, the thing hissed and leaked untill i figured out the reactor was not designed to work on the psi that the pump was putting out. Your pump will transfer the same pressure to all the equipment.

the small blue line fed my reactor..

I do have 2 Tunze 6100's doing most of my in tank circulation.
You had that much pressure through that little line? Hydrulics is an amazing thing.
