I found my overflow is actually quieter when I remove the standpipe and just leave the bulkhead at the bottom. The tank is 600mm high. My problem is my long nose hawkfish regularly wanders in to my overflow (I have a weir but somehow he gets past). With the standpipe the overflow chamber acts as a little refugium so no harm done.

My questions is... if I remove the standpipe (for the reduced noise), how can I still use the overflow as refugium for when the hawkfish wanders in to it? I do not have room for a durso standpipe.

Instead of Durso standpipes have you considered either Stockman or Hofer Gurgle busters

Both of these take up less space but use the same principles to reduce noise.

If you still wish to not use a standpipe, consider putting something over the overflow to keep out the hawkfish. Egg crate/ light defuser would be self supporting and have minimal affect on the overflow.

Hope that helps.
