Thicker sandbed

I'm going to increase my sandbed in my refugium from 2" to 5". Should I just add to the existing bed or take it out and start over with all new sand?

add to it. if you take it out it will stirr everything up and thats no good

ok, but it has alot of aptasia in it, so should I remove them or leave them? I've heard they are beneficial in the fuge, but will they end up in the display if they are thick in the fuge?

I was told that if you cover them you can smother them like mushrooms. But not to kill off a lot at once.
