Quick question - return line

How do I break the syphon to the sump when the main pump shuts off? Will a small hole in the return line near the top of the water work?

yes, most of us just drill a small hole near the top. I would drill two just in case.

I drilled a 1/4" hole right below the water line.

I like the hole just below water level approach. it's always quiet. Make sure that cleaning the hole is part of your regular maintenance procedure. They get clogged with coralline or regular algae, salt buildup, etc if ignored.
