I want to add a sump on to my tank setup. Right now i have a non drilled glass 55 gallon tank. So i am going to go with an overflow to drain into the sump. I have a few questions after that. What would be the right size for the overflow? 300gph? 600gph or more?

I also don't have a return pump either but i know the pump is determined by the overflow. So what would the best return pump be?

Thanks
Cory

Pump is not determined by the overflow. An overflow is not a drain and will only flow as much as the return pump "returns" up to its limit.

If the return pump moves 200 gph to the tank the overflow will overflow 200 gph back to the sump. Flow more than the overflow is rated for and the water will have no choice but to go over the sides of the tank!

Personally I like my sump on the lower side as far as flow. I like to see 3 - 5x turnover. So for you 150 to 250 gph though the sump is what I would do.
