Info on thehe New LED Reef Lights

Has any one out there bought or used these new lights? They claim to produce as much as MH with far less heat. BUT BOY ARE THEY EXPENSIVE.

UNtil I dont have to take a loan out to buy them I wont own them. I hear they are good.

There is a wide price range but the least expensive start at $1000 and go up to about $4500.

They say they are equivalent to 250MH or even 400 in some versions. The link to see them is below.

If you do the math, and keep the same tank for two years they come out to be about even. With MH you have to take into effect original cost, bulb changes, chiller, and electricity.

With that said I still won't own one till they come down bit.

I have the 400 watt equivalent solaris I. They are so cool with all the stuff they can do. They definitly put out what a 250 watt MH could do but 400 may be stretching it. My tank is pretty new, I dont have any coral yet to tell you how it affects them. But these lights are cool. All the defferent setting and lunar phases and stuff are awesome.

It would take a few years to relize any money saved on your power bill with them. Plus it looks like if you don't like the look of the color K you choose you are stuck with it. With halides you can just buy a different bulb instead of relplacing 30 LED which would probably run you a good bit judging by the price on the fixture.

Can someone post a pic of a tank running these? They seem like they'd be great but I read somewhere that someone saw a tank running them and it looked terrible. Can't imagine why or how, but I'm curious.

click my red house, theres about a dozen pics of them up and runnng. Also Runfrumu, you can change the K by adjusting the ratio of white to blue leds, its actually easier you just ajust it from the computer on the front of the solaris.

manufacturers website http://www.solarisled.com I've seen them on a few tanks at one of the higher end(overpriced) lfs near me. they're pretty impressive

With the Solaris you can change the color or bulb temp with the touch of a button. Not changing 30 leds.

I saw a store down in Tuscon which experienmentally had a 200 gallon or more tank running on these. He said they paid I think $3500 for the lights and thats at cost without markup. 6 months old the tank was beautiful. Huge hard corals all over the place. He said the lights gave tremendous growth even deep in the tank. Cost is the major issue as said though. He also tried something that gave awsome results. He covered the back glass with some kind of black foam and then stuck live rock in and made cliffs and overhangs. Came out looking reeally good.

I have. a 52 in hallide with 21 LED lighting.

its actually really cool at night time i run it..
It penetrates really good.


Its pretty hot, but they dont radiate far.
