Does anyone know what the weights are made of in the Hagen floating thermometers ? And if so, it's effect on a reef tank ?

Lead maybe?

I just read on the Hagen site that the balls are made of a lead alloy. Lead is quite toxic, but there is no real data on the subject concerning salt water. In many cases in fresh water there was a buildup of lead in the organisims being tested.

I noticed that the glass was cracked at the bottom, but it was still in one piece. When I took it out of the tank, the bottom piece of glass came off with not much trying. It was wet inside.

This might explain some problems that I've had over the last few years. I have no idea how long it has been like that. I'll just have to wait and see.

You could try running a PolyFilter. That might help.

lead........100% certain its lead.

i have a free floating one (no suction cups - diff brand but looks the same)......

lead is the best metal to use for balast in this type of equipment...but if it breaks....watch out
