Anyone have any luck keeping a sun coral in their nano? If so, what do they require to thrive?

I had a ten gallon nanowith sun coral and softies for a while. I fed the polyps daily with a syringe full of mysis/brine. They did very well and new polyps started popping up in different areas of the tank. I was doing weekly water changes to keep the pollutants down from all the feedings which got old after a few months and I took the sun coral out. If you're willing to feed them and do the required maintenance to keep good water quality. They will do very well. Unfortunately I got lazy with the tank after a while.

I have them and some other non-photo's in my 20. I am up way to late tonight feeding them as a matter of fact.

To keep the bio-load down, I have no fish. Even though I really want a 6-line wrasse, NO FISH. I don't do water changes like I should, so I am fighting a cyano problem right now. I target feed every two to three days. If I go four days, they get lethargic, if I go five they start to look a little bad. After that, I have to feed every day for a week to get them back. I have had tissue recession and recovered. I have had periods of very good growth and periods of none. I have had them for 10 months now.

Overall, I would consider them very challenging, not because they can't easily be kept, but because of the huge effort to provide them with food. Don't kid yourself, it is a pain. I have my hands in the tank every other day for at least 30 minutes. The bio-load is huge and limits choices on other inhabitants. To be quit honest, I would enjoy the tank more without them. Will I get rid of them? He|| no! They are really cool.

sun corals are non photostnthetic so you can keep under very low light or in a cave. thats why you have to feed them so much, just like gargonian, chilli corals i think i might be missing a couple too.

If you want to keep the tank clean, you can feed them in a plastic bowl or small pail. Just fill the container with salt water to cover the coral, add some food and stirring the food around while leaving the coral in the container for 5 -10 minutes. They get feed much better this way (no competition) and you may not have to do it daily.
