Hey guys I don't know weather or not to get the black sand or the white kind so I was wondering if people can show me pics of both so I can see what I like better..

Also what is the difference besides color?

Here are some pics of mine.

If you find the right sand you can have no real differences in chemistry and grain size between white and black sand.

I like the look - when it is clean. Definitely more work to keep it clean...

I believe the black sand is mostly composed of silicates, opposed to white sand, which is mostly aragonite. Not quite sure of the validity of this.

From what I understand this is true for the black sand I am using.

For what it's worth I have an aragonite sand bed in my fuge/sump to help buffer my system a little more.

Rosseau I love how your tank looks...Thats one thing why I like the black it shows the other colors better..

So If I did black sand you think I should do black sand in my sump/fuge as well? And whats the best brand to get thats close to white sand??

I would put black sand in your display, white in the fuge; unless you have live black sand handy.

Would live black sand be the best to get? Cause I don't have anything right now..I'm waiting for my decision on what to get..
So should I get it live? What the best kind? and white or black in fuge?

gee, you could have glass marbles with that anemone and still love it... that thing is sweet.

as for the next question about live black sand... unless someone sells it off locally to you it's not made. aragalive has a "black sand" but it's black and white.

i set up a nano with black sand tonight, waiting for pics tomorrow as things are STRESSED OUT!!!

EWC88,

Do you/Are you going to have a sump for this tank?

For the tank I linked you to I only used live rock in the system. My sand was "dead" when I bought it. I just let the tank cycle for a while.

When I added my sump into the mix I actually put in caribsea aragalive sand. Though I don't think it was critical as my tank was a few months old by then.
