your lucky to have healthy elegance corals. have you read this months article on elegance corals?? its interesting!

Sandeep

My very tiny little elegance frag is growing surprisingly fast so far and is now slightly smaller than the size of a quarter. Not only is the existing tissue expanding, but he's even grown new tissue and new tentacles that you can see in the photograph on his lower right side. It looks like he is trying to complete the disk, it will be interesting to see if that's a mouth developing in the middle.

This is what he looked like initially after inadvertantly chipping off when I was fragging my elegance into three pieces, smaller than a dime in this photograph:
http://www.tulwar.com/imagehost/NanoJan5_08a.jpg

and this is what he looks like now:
http://www.tulwar.com/imagehost/NanoJan23_08b.jpg

I've now sold two of the three larger elegance frags. Here is a updated family photo showing the tiny little guy in the bottom left, the remaining elegance frag in the top middle and my other unfragged elegance at home on the top right.

Wow very beautiful nano! :)

I really love the elegance corals. I would have one, but my 120 is just too high flow, and my 24g nanocube is too much of a mess to add another coral to.

excellent lighting!

Sandeep
01/24/2008, 10:24 PM
Pretty simple and clean setup:

Lighting
Two T5 HO fixtures each with two tubes under a shared reflector. One a GLO canopy and one a Current USA canopy. Each tube is 24 watts, so tank total with all four T5 HO tubes is a nice energy friendly and cool 98 watts. Two are actinics tubes plus one 10,000K tube and one 6500K tube providing a broad spectra that the corals and clam seem to love and thrive in.

Filteration/Flow
No sump or overflow, just a self contained tank. 25% water change every two weeks.

Flow is pretty simple too, one Maxi-Jet 900 in the right corner. Another Maxi-Jet 900 powers a Aqua C Nano Remora Protein Skimmer in the left corner. Mild flow because LPS corals really don't like high flow blowing them around.

Just wondering how your lights are set up. Do you have 2 actinics in one fixture or one in each. Also, do you have them on a time and if so how long do you run each? Do you turn your actinics on earlier and off later? I wondering because I have the exact same fixtures and skimmers also on my 20gal which is not completely set up yet. Thanks for the info.

Sandeep
03/30/2008, 05:34 PM
I've got the actinics split up between the two fixtures. The Glo has one actinic and one 6,500K tubes and the Current USA fixture has one actinic and one 10,000K tubes.

Keeping it simple., both fixtures are run on the same 10 hours cycle and I don't use a moonlight.

I love the elegance! Where did you get them and how do you like your remora nano? I just set up a 28 gallon tank (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1346261) and am debating about adding a skimmer.

I love the elegance too, they are the centerpiece of my tank. Got them from a couple of LFS up here.

The Remora Aqua C Nano has been running over a year now with no problems or issues. Highly recommended once you do the sound modification to it making it pretty much silent.

I've got another question. What kind of lights are you running in your t5 glo fixture. Are they glo lights or another brand. Also in the Current USA fixture are they the lights that came with your fixture.

You have some phenomenal colors in that little box! I love the torch corals, beautiful animals. Are you using crushed coral as a substrate? How do you like it? You gravel vaccuum it i assume when you do those water changes? What are you dosing for calcium, do you use anything?

I am planning on setting up a nano of similar size some day, i was planning on an SPS dominated tank but now i'm considering their more fleshy cousins. I love the colors of those corals, and the elegance. Any secrets on keeping those beauties long term?

Sorry to ask this again, but what brand of tubes are you using? Especially the actinics. I absolutely love the color you are getting (at least in the pictures that you are sharing). I have a 28 gallon and would like to utilize your same combination of T5 bulbs.

Thanks!

Wow lots of questions, sorry for not responding sooner.

1) 10K and actinic in the Current USA fixture that it comes with. A GLO 6.5K and GLO actinic in the GLO fixture.

2) I use Kents Turbo Calcium, keeping it around 400 and Kent Superbuffer dKH to keep the alkalinity in the 7-8 range.

3) It's crushed coral, that's the way I set it up, wish I would have gone with a fine sand instead. I vaccum the substrate once every 3 to 6 months, don't want to do it more frequent than that otherwise might get rid of beneficial organisms.

4) Damsels are good, had a clown and got rid of it as it was nesting in the Elegance which can damage its tissue. Damsels are pretty, intelligent and tough, they only eat when I give the tank it's one weekly feeding of cyclopeze/mysis.

5) Yeah that surface film bugs me, I don't have a surface skimmer.

Sandeep
04/29/2008, 02:02 PM
The six-line wrasse died, looks like it was infected with parasites from the LFS. I had gotten him specifically because he is a predator of small animals including flat worms which can damage my elegance. May get another one down the road.

Clam has been doing great for the past year that I've had him, although growth has been very slow (which is a good thing in a nano reef). You'd be surprised how bright 4 T5-HO tubes can be.

Love the Remora Nano skimmer. Once I did the silence modification, it's really been truly silent and it's quite efficient. I'm thinking of making a surface skimmer intake for it as I have a lot of oil and crap floating around on the surface.

Wow Sandeep another one of your nice setups. I noticed this 20g in your pictures from your 5g nano build and I was waiting for you to post pictures of this one. After looking at the pictures I have to say that you are very creative and the corals in the corals look brilliant. Sorry to hear that your Six-line wrasse died, same happened to the Six-line that I bought and I ended up buying another one immediately the next day. Great looking tank....keep it up.

How do you find the temperature of your tank with a glass lid and the glo fixture sitting right on top of it like that. I have two of those fixtures, think a glass top would work for me like that? Would it crack from the heat from the fixture? How often do you clean it? Thanks

Have you ever caught your torch coral stinging any of the other corals? I ask because I also have a 20 High with a torch in it, and he's gonna get fairly big.

Sandeep
07/30/2008, 02:46 PM
Glass top is the way to go to keep evaporation under control and maintain water stability. I have two T5-HO fixtures each with two tubes over the tank and temps are pretty stable at 80F, no heat issues really. I clean it of salt residue about once a month and do 5 gallon water changes every two weeks.

No the way I've placed my torch is very high up and away from all the other corals so he cant sting anyone (yet). I also keep my feeding limited to once a week so you don't have rapid growth.

Did some rearranging to create a less crowded look. Created an Elegance Island on the right and placed the large and small Elegance corals there and a LPS rock cliff on the left. This had created a nice large open space in the tank that my clam and Cynarina can enjoy while the Tomato Clown and two yellow-tail Damsels get more swimming space too as a bonus.
