Mesh mod impellers...Whats the real deal??

I just turned a small 600gpm powerhead into a POWERHOUSE!!!

It almost sucked my finger up into the intake.

My questions are......

1. What is the difference between mesh and a regular impeller when it comes to head pressure and volume?
Can a standard impeller push water further than a mesh mod but with less volume?

2. Why are mesh impellers not available on the market if there so great?

hmm. 600 gpm doesn't sound very small to me :D

there are kits available that sell the components to make the mod, but so far, no retrofit mesh-wheel or mesh-wheel pump. also, since these seem relatively easy to make, its probably cheaper to make it yourself. i have a feeling that if someone mass-produced and marketed these, they'd be just as expensive as NW's.
