Hi -
I am looking to get the 24G nano cube for a family member as a gift but heard that they did have some cracking issues... I know that this has been solved but does anyone know when or which models to avoid? This one is on sale but I don't want to get it if it is an old one... http://www.petsolutions.com/24G-Nano-Cube-Deluxe+I92412099.aspx
Also... I know it doesn't come with the surface skimmer and I can get that separate but is that the only difference with that and the new DX?
Thanks!

Cracking issues were common before 2005, they have since used thicker glass when making these. You can tell a new unit from the old one because new units have white serial numbers on the back. I've had mine almost 2 years w/o a problem.
That's a good tank at a good price. A couple other places to compare prices would be www.jbjnanocubes.com and Dr. Foster and Smith which has the 24g Aquapods on sale for less than $200 ($170 if I remember right).

Great...thanks! DrsF&S is $240 for the nanocube but with a free stand which may make sense...and I don't know much about the aquapod?? I had checked JBJ and it was $220 but about $40+ shipping. The first one I emailed was no shipping!!
I feel better knowing that it was 2005 with the issues...just wish I could see the serial number on the back before I order!

I'm 100% sure that the 3 vendors I listed have the newer models. I actually bought mine from jbjnanocubes.com at the end of 05 and it was new. I know there was a thread in the Dr. Foster & Smith forum here that someone asked about this as well and were reassured that they were the newer models. Never dealt with Petsupplies but no way do they have 2 year old tanks sitting around waiting to be sold.
The info on the serial number is more if your looking into used units and helps you know which ones to avoid.
I'd consider the Dr's, they have such cheap shipping.

I usually order from them (Drs)... and have always been happy - and usually comes very fast. I just sent an email to the other gift giver about the stand. That may be the best deal. Thanks!
