I would like to buy my dad a 3gallon picotope tank for christmas. He wasn't really into reefing when I started, but now that I really got the tank going he's gaining more and more interest.

I'm looking at two tanks with dramatically different price tags.

Of course, part of the gift is maintenance. He gets to enjoy it at his desk, while I take care of everything else.

Cheap one: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3730+15493&pcatid=15493

Very expensive one:

Looks like the pricey one has higher output bulbs and better filtration. But I'm thinking I can go with the cheaper one and just upgrade these parts and still cut some red tape.

I agree, only thing I'd change would be the hang on filters. I assume they're hang on filters.. can't see them in the pic. :)

He's good with wood though. If he wants to cover it up, he can easily.

The Dr F&S gets my vote too. If you double click the pic you can see the hob filter. You can increase the lighting easily by adding a Galaxy Light (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3733+8154&pcatid=8154)

Consider the Tom's Deco 3. Upside: it has twice as much power as the JBJ and a better pump. I think it is still on sale for DRSF. The down side is it is acrylic. I have one and it is really great for about 40 bucks
