I just made up a large batch of two (really 3) part solution the other day. I noticed that the mag flakes I got, made by North American Salt Company (I think), were silghtly grayish in color. When I mixed the solution, the water was initially slightly grayish as well. After sitting for a while, the grayish impurity seemed to precipitate to the bottom. I am wondering if this is normal and safe to use, Also, I'm assuming I probably do not want to shake it up before using it, but rather pour off the top and discard the precipitate. Advice?

If you mix Epsom salts and MAG flake, you typically get some precipitation, probably calcium sulfate. That type of precipitate is OK to dose. Was it just MAG flake or a mixture?

Many of these materials have some insolubles anyway. I'd just let them settle out and not dose them.

I made the 5/3 mag chloride/mag sulfate mixture. The raw chemimal that looked dirty was just the mag chloride though. thanks for the quick response.
