Recommended pump for a basement sump?

I am planning a 60g display tank in our living room and would like to run the plumbing downstairs to a basement sump set-up. I figure that the water will travel about 12 vertical feet to get from the sump to the display. My question is, do I need to figure in the horizontal distance in the "head" rating for the pump? It will run about 25 feet horizontally and 12 feet vertically. I could move the sump closer if the horizontal distance is an issue. Any information will help!

I use a mag 50 going 14 ft up and maybe 8 feet across.

I use a Mag 7 to go about 8 ft up and 20 ft. horizontal. It works great for me because it is the right flow to put all the return to display tank water thru a phosban reactor.

You need more head pressure then me because of your height, but I hope this helps.

One other thing the pressure line is 1/2 inch pex and the gravety back is 3/4.

They will work, but they are tough on the electric bill. A more efficient pump will pay for its self faster than those. Plus I think they will be too much flow for a 60 gallon, unless the sump is HUGE ...well over 100 gallons.

Sry I dont pay electric. So I wouldnt know that yet. But when I do start paying sometime next spring I will pay more attention.

I go up 14 feet with an Iwaki WMD-40RLT to a 65. More than enough flow, very quiet and energy smart.

OKay, so with the display being 60 gallons, what would yhou recommend the flow rate be from the sump? I was planning a 30 or a 45 gallon sump. Thanks!

I personally like a slower turnover, in your case 300- 350 gallons per hour. You could buy a slightly larger pump and divert some of it directly back to the sump. At least that way if you upgrade later, you wont have to buy another pump.
