HEy HEy
we have a65 gallon tank, with 31 lbs of LR. If we add 30 more pounds of base rock will that act as a filter also?? Or does it have to be all LR for it to filter immediatly.???
Thanks Guys!!!:D

It may help a little but you get most of the benifit after its more mature and full of pods. If you keep water quality high and have proper flow this wont take to long.
But flow is the key to LR converting ammonia and nitrate into harmless nitrogen and as well for the SB to convert nitrate into nitrogen. If flow is to low or even to high then the LR and LS will only cause high nitrate and have little or no ammonia control affect.

the best way to do it is to put the base rock on the bottom and spread the live rock around it, and in time all of the live stuff from from the live rock will spread and make your base rock live rock. that is the best way to do it.

eventually base rock will become live but it depends on how well established your system is (how many pods and such you have today). You might want to cure the dead rock for a bit outside of your tank before adding it to your system (it may leach some stuff off).

just as an added thought i have always been an advocate of adding new rock 10 lbs at a time, this might now apply to base rock tho idk.
