I just set mine up a few days ago. I used a 20 gallon long tank with 80 pounds of sand (40 lbs of Nature's ocean live aragonite black sand and 40 pounds of caribsea black sand). The sand don't look black though and I may need more. I also have 20 mangroves and a small 60 watt heat lamp behind the tank since my basement gets a bit cool in the winter. I rigged up a cheap old compact fluorescent unit that hangs over the tank as well. Water is pumped from the sump into the mangrove tank, then overflows into my refugium, then back into the sump near the return. We will see how it goes.

Thanks capn_hylinur, I have been reading that thread, good stuff!
tktodd the tanks looking great! Do you plan to add any fish or invertebrates?
It would be interesting to see an established mangrove habitat tank. Or, maybe even a display with corals and integrated mangroves. I've seen pictures of reef tanks with mangroves occasionally, but usually they are whole tank shots and you cant seem much detail.
I'd love to see a close up of this tank for example..

looks good--what made you go with the argonite substrate and not miracle mud?

Thanks!! Mainly because I could get the sand local and not the mineral mud. I originaly wanted to go with mineral mud, but it would have cost me too much for shipping, and the stuff is expensive. So that's why I went with half live sand and half regular sand. I have also seen other mangrove tanks here on RC with sand beds deeper than mine, and they looked nice.:)

the mangroves will defintely survive--the mud supplies a great variety of inverts for the tank--that's all
