My dog has brought fleas in to the house, and i need to get rid of them. what would be the best way to get rid of the fleas and not harm the fish tank. i thought of shutting off the protein skimmer and putting plastic wrap to cover the tank and sump below. the tank is located in the finished basement. i will flea bomb the 1st floor and i need help with what to do in the basement.
please help, i am wanting to do this asap!!
thanks

Call a vet and ask for a recommendation. There may be a powder flea killer you could use in the basement but you'd need to be careful during the vaccuming-it-up part....

You can get a capsole from the vet that you put on the dogs back.It will kill what is on him and as he walks around the fleas will jump back on him from the carpet and kill them to.
Ask the Vet they will know what it is.

What the poster's above said... it's called REVOLUTION, and w/in 3 weeks, no more fleas! (and more importantly, no spraying or fogging the house!)

Try advantage. It goes on the dogs back and kills all the fleas on the dog and in the house. good luck

I think the thread initiator is focusing on how to get the fleas out of the house more than off the dog at this time. Advantage does NOT kill fleas in the house unless by chance they happen to jump back on the dog.

CAPSTAR will eliminate all fleas on your dog in 24 hours... Revolution is a decent flea product but Frontline and Advantage typically work better. You need to use a product with an insect growth regulator to break the flea life cycle. Vacuuming is vital to remove life stages from the carpet. Wash your pet's bedding frequently. To effectively eliminate the fleas you need to treat the indoor and out door environments. An alternative to the indoor "bombs" are borax based powders such as Flea Busters. Please consult with your veterinarian for the proper flea prevention medicine for ALL of your pets... they are not all the same and your vet can help you select a product that is best for you and your pets.

I have used this and it works great. Put it near where the dog sleeps.

When I had to bomb my hose I put alot of sheets and blankets over my tank. I then shut don everything and bombed the house. I didnt put the foggers in the same room as the tank though. you also dont want to leave anything on either. One spark and there goes your house.

We had to bomb our house for fleas too. We covered the tank in heavy plastic, turned off all the pumps/lights/etc and bombed the house (not in the same room as fish tank, but the next one) and left it off for about 10 hours. Came back and started it up without any problems. Sure was scary though......

Not to downplay canarygirl's input, but you've to realize, fleas need blood (animal of any kind) to feed. The ones in the house will die eventually (3 weeks...ish, up to 6) if they don't jump back on the host (dog) to feed. This is why the above medications are so great, because if they are on your dog, they will die quickly, if they are off your dog and jump back on, they will die. If they don't get the chance to jump back on your dog, and you and your family practice regular hygene.... they will die without food.
Now, I have not tried advantage, but REVOLUTION (which we used, and worked like a charm) we put on both the cats and dogs, and have been flea free for over a year.
with that said, yes, bombs work, but why not try the less agressive route first.

We have a cat and also use advantage with no effects on our aquarium what so ever. Just NEVER pet you dog and then stick your hand into the aquarium with out washing them first.
The fleas not on your dog will die over time, without a host they will die. If they are really bad there is a product that you can put on your carpet, and then vacuum it up to kill them but after the advantage the fleas will dye off soon.
