Stupid!

3 months ago i went and bought a 3" clown tang for my 40 gal i thought he would be fine as i could put him in my tank that i will be setting up during summer 2008 when he gets bigger but then i went home and researched :eek1: then i find out they need a tank that is minimum size of 150gallon theyre is nobody that will take him from me and the place i got him from wont take him back i really dont know what to do luckily he hasn't had any disease yet, i think thats a miracle. I really dont know what to do

Please do not post comments telling me how stupid i was, i KNOW i was.

I just want to know if there was anything i can do

Maybe one of the Manhattan reef club guys can help you out?

Try to find an LFS that will let you trade. Perhaps put a post on a local reefing forum in your area. Someone close to you may want to buy trade or simply find a way to help you out.

The only good LFS is the place i got him from and its 1 hour away.

Althought the tank is too small, the tang will most likely be ok in there until you find another home for him.

I would do as others have said, and try to find a bigger/better home for him ASAP, but if he's done ok so far, and isn't growing at an extreme rate, don't panic too much yet.

Do you have many other fish in the tank with it?

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 0

Hes not breathing fast either hes swimming about all the time.

Trying to get pics of him but he just swims off all the time.

If he is ok till the summer, would he be ok in a 100?(if i cant find him another home till then)

I don't have an abundance of experience with tangs (or any other larger fish) as I only have a 55 gallon tank. I do keep a yellow tang in my tank, and it's healthy. It seems to act normal, but it is really the only free swimmer in the tank as I have a watchman goby, mandarin goby, and a pair of clowns (that once introduced will hopefully stay close to their anemone).

I'm not saying it's the best practice, but I've had the tang for a couple years with no issues.

I would say a 100 gallon would obviously be better, but still not ideal due to the nature and size of the fish.

Haven't you had some issues with other tangs to this point as well? How did those turn out?

It wasn't issues with tangs that ive KEPT i was wanting a yellow tang and was wondering if it would be ok in the 40gal until i setup the the 100 in summer 08. When i first started with SW the 40gal my 1st i was looking on the internet for all these fish i was going to get which included PBT's, yellows, sohals, mandarins, puffers etc all in this 40gal but then doing further research i obviously found out i couldnt which i why i thought ill get this 40 and then see how i get on with it, then ill move up to a bigger tank. I do have friends that help me out with answers on here sometime if theyre round at my house. but none of them can thing of anything to do with the clown tang and they dont want to take him off me. Im really stuck what to do

I wouldn't fret just yet...I have three tangs in my 110, although you will eventually need a bigger tank for the guy...I would say you have got some time...with that in mind I would pace myself and way out my options....see if you can sell him to someone locally...trade him in at the LFS..or wait and see if a bigger tank is a possibility...but don't pull the trigger just yet....

07kar93: My lfs gave me a mandarinfish many yrs. ago because it was dying. At that time I only had a 10 gallon tank and copepods were not even avaliable. But I kept him alive for ??? I don't know?
Several years.
I was so set on getting him healthy and keeping him alive that I just kept working with him on every kind of food I could, even fruit-flies. But it worked and he got fat...lol

Point being you can make your wrong right by giving this new critter a lot of attention, (in the feeding dept.)

Excessive feeding could make this guy grow even faster along with polluting the tank.

If he's good and plump now, keep doing what you're doing, and get the new tank ready IMO.

Thats exactly why im not feeding im to muc, i feed one cube of frozen brine a day and it seems to be fine BUT i didn't notice it before but i went to check the tank and he has like a small cut on the right side of him its white could this be lateral line?

With all due respect, lucky, having a tank thats not "big" enough for a mandarin and having a tank thats not big enough for a clown tang are two totally different things. :)

The mandarins need copepods, and the bigger your tank, the more likely there are to be places for pods to reproduce and the more pods overall.

With a tang, it needs more space to swim. This just flat out means a bigger tank. You can kind of fake it with a mandarin, its just easiest to do that with a larger tank. :)

I have a yellow tang in my 310 and he never sits still, ha! he tries to get others to race him and everything else just to get someone to play with him. I thought of puting a hippo in for him?

They are exactly right,If he is eating, keep him on the slim-fast diet..lol

If there is I have a hermit crab that needs it asap, he is in a shell about the size of a tennis ball. He is starting to be a problem and shells for him are tough to find, but I kinda like the guy and I'd miss him if we had to eat him

I have four tangs and the oldest is 14 years old so from experience with clown tang i had i will said the fish will die 50% of the time, they are very hard to take care of. You need a 200 Gallons + tank minimum i will defiantly look for a new home for him/her.
This tang if it makes it , it will grow about 3" a year and will get very nasty and about the average size of 14" to 16" in a big tank about 300+ gallon.
I don't even think about getting one my self any more they are beautiful looking fish, i really like to have one but i know i'm looking for trouble . ;)

IF they were really that good. You would not have been sold the fish in the 1st place. They would have inquired about the system that you were planning on putting it into to. That is if they know or care. And if they were really that good they would agree to help you out just to see to it that you do well in the hobby and that the fish does well. It would appear they have their dough for the fish and what happens after that is happenchance.

I would advise that for your pocketbook's sake and any livestock you decide to obtain from this fish store that you have your book work done ahead of time and you be very measured in what advice if any you take in faith from this "good LFS".

Sorry to hear about your dilema. It's even worse since these fish apparently due to extreme diet and what is believed to be a unique migratory journey from fry to small fish. They cannot be live bred in captivity at this time and are a finite resource. Good Luck.

By good i meant the livestock are healthy and very well kept. What do you mean by extreme diet?
Its only 1 guy who works in the marine section and he is knowledgable but i dont think he knew anything about clown tangs because they rarely have them in. This has made me research before buying a fish from now on.

I agree... I saw the owner of the lfs here sell a big puffer and 3 cleaner shrimp to this guy with his wife and little kids. It's like hey, thanks for buying 60 bucks worth of puffer food... buddy. And, I hope your family enjoys the slaughter. I'm just saying... If they are going to sell a very tempermental and space demanding fish to an unexpecting guy with a small tank... they should do the right thing and take the fish back. Maybe with a small restocking fee or something.
