I know Grim has his T5 Q&A thread, but is there any list that shows each bulb's PAR numbers that he has tested without having to dig through the gigantic Q&A thread?

You can't compare that to these numbers, Ballast, calibration, temp etc. chasnge things up. Just compare the numbers for those 5 lamps to the Aquablue that was used in that test. Then you can reference to the diference between the different lamps in the first tests to see where they are. They were close but a little off.

Is there a way to convert PAR to PPFD or are these two completely different measurements? The reason I ask is Sanjay's site for MH's reads everything in PPFD while the T-5's seem to all be measured in PAR. For an accurate comparison I was hoping to convert one to the other. TIA.

Grims T5 tests are ony for comparison amongst bulbs to get an idea of what bulbs put out more or less light than others. These tests were done without reflectors and 1" from the bulb, so the #'s will be of no value to compare to a MH or any other setup.

No way to compare the two. Sanjay's readings are done completly different than what I do. His readings are very precise due to the controlled conditions and equipment he has.. That way you cam compare his numbers from one test to another. Mine are just ballpark and wont be as precise.

That's why I was asking for a conversion from PPFD to PAR so I could compare Grim's numbers (he test's T-5's) and Sanjay's (he tests MH's).

Grim do you know the par on the UVL 75/25 bulb?

75/25 is a bit below the Blue Pluses.

You cant compare my lamp PAR readings to any others. Different equipment and standards for testing.

How was this test done? Is that the reading of par right underneath the light or under the water surface etc...

I have to buy T5 bulbs as mine are closing in on the one year mark and I read that some people have had better par with Geismann over the ATI.

Taken at the lamp. In me experience ATI and Giesemann start close but within a few weeks the Geisemann had lost more PAR to the point the ATI had a significant advantage.

Hey Grim,

You've posted so much info on T5's it's like Grim's T5 Encylopedia lol

I was thinking for my Tek Light 6 bulb from Sunlight I could have:

ATI Blue + (3)
ATI Aquablue Special (1)
KZ Fiji Purple (1)
UVL Aquasun (1)

Hi Grim,

I am curious as to why you recommend that combination. Also, can you confirm this chart here is accurate for PAR ratings? It was the reason for my suggested bulb list.

Thanks

Because it looks good and hits all the spectrum better.

As far as the chart is looks accurate EXCEPT for one thing. Sanjay found that when reading par with a spectrometer which is a whole lot more accurate than a PAR meter the Blue Plus had more PAR that the Aquasun. We have also found the UVL lamps don't hold the PAR very well.

Very interesting - thank you. I can't seem to find the GE 6500K at online stores that ship here to Canada, so I may try Wal Mart's fish section. The rest I should be able to get online. Originally I was going to buy the AI SOL's but at $500 a unit, it's a bit much right now. I hear their PAR readings blow things out the water though (no pun intended).

I was also going to buy an Apogee PAR meter but a spectrometer is more accurate you say? Do you have a link or a model name of the unit?

------------

Just noticed that spectrometers are priceyyyyyy - The Apogee seems like the best budget fit. I also found this info on taking par readings:

"What you could do is obtain 2 PAR readings. 1 with Daylight and 1 with Actinic. Double the Actinic PAR readings and add them to the Daylight readings for a more realistic sense of PAR.

When you run the meter with both colors on, you should notice it will be around 70-80% of the number you get above."

No but I am guessing the one Sanjay uses costs several thousand dollars at least. Cheapest one I've seen was like a grand.

do 4 blue plus with a Fiji Purple and a GE 6500K Daylight.

Hey Grim your a wealth of info. I have been poking arount your T5 threads for some time now. I am getting a Tek 6 bulb fixture...
do you have a pic of what you suggested? do the colors even come out in pics anyway ?

Hi, my LFS is trying to sell me on Aquaticlife bulbs. I asked him about ATI and he had not heard of them but is looking to see if he can get them. Does anyone have a PAR measurement for Aquaticlife bulbs?

Thanks

I wouldn't trust a LFS that doesn't know who ATI is.

AquatucLife bulbs are cheap and low PAR. The blues don't look too bad but I wouldn't waste money on them.

So where are these PAR Ratings taken?

Top of the Aquarium?
Middle?
Sand Bed?

Does anybody have the PAR Rating for ATI's newest Bulbs the "Purple Plus" and the "Coral Plus"?

I am very curious about those Bulbs.

I want the link that shows Sanjay testing the blue plus bulb & it being more PAR than 6500k t5 bulbs. I have asked multiple times about this. Will someone prove this , if it was T5 bulbs & the ones mentioned.
No one can give me a link.

There is no link.

A few years back and 99 splits ago on the t5 thread, a guy went to a club meeting where sanjay spoke and he said the blue plus was the highest PAR bulb he tested.

That's where that comes from.

I trust Sanjay's word on it. AND I know the par meters do not measure PAR deep into the blue spectrum where a lot of the blue plus (Plus being in the 420nm actinic spectrum) output is. If you go to apogee's website it shows a graph for the range of light the sensor reads. It gets around the actinic range and falls like a rock. Sanjay has access to a spectrometer which measures the full range of PAR.
