Over the past few months my nitrate level has started to climb more than I would like (around 5ppm I believe using a Salifert test kit). I have a sand bed that is probably 2-3" deep. When I originally started the tank I used a combination of live marine sand, aragonite, and crushed coral. The crushed coral was probably a mistake. It looked great at first, but has probably added to a series of challenges. I am going to have to redo some of my rockwork anyway. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to stripping off the top 1/2" or so of crushed coral? I do not want to cause a nitrate spike, but I also do not want the nitrates to continue to climb over time.

You should be ok as long as you dont stir up the sand. If you suction it out you should be fine. I would also look into seeing where else the nitrates could be coming from.
