Got this from Ron @ Reef Tec. He said it was a Bowerbanki, but I have no idea. Its pink and green.

My pink hillae. My most prized coral. I sometimes look at my tank and play that save the coral game. If I could only save one coral from my tank which would it be. It would be this one.

I am jealous, I have neither but am waiting either for a nice deal on getting a head or two to start a colony or eventually someday the bank to be able to purchase one anyway.
I know they aren't the most common thing but their pricing just seems too high and even irregular sometimes.
How do you find the growth of them to be?

Monkey that first one is sweet.
Airinhere I can see why you'd save that one. Thats a nice colony.
Hogfirsh those are some nice colors.
Andrew can't tell much from that picture, but from what I've of your corals I'm sure its a nice one.
Christie I paid way too much for mine. And pricing is really irregular. There are alot of the aussie ones out there, and if you stay away from the "exotic" specialist you'll find them really reasonable. I've seen purple and green hillae frags for like $20 a head. Thats dirt cheap. Growth IME is pretty slow. That red and teal one that I have in the first picture had two adult heads when I first got it, about a year ago. I was looking for the picture of when I first got it so I can show you then and now. Of course I always run into it when I don't need it, now I've been looking for 20 mins and can't find it. Anyways when I first got it it had adult heads, now those heads have gotten alot bigger and have grown more mouths around it. I think I have about 6 additional mouths now. But it seems like it takes forever for them to fully develope. I feed them here and there. But at least they've grown more mouths. That was the first Hillae I bought, and it came from one of those exotic farmers so I paid a premium. But I was mislead because he told me it was pink. He promised not a reddish pink but pink, pink. I've seen a fully pink no red Hillae before, so I knew it was possible. So I forked out the cash. It looked kinda reddish pink in my tank, then once it settled in it was red. This was the first time I dealt with him I called him and he said well you know, under different lights and different tanks the corals will change slightly. Lesson learned.
The pink one is a totally different story. I've had that piece for about 14 months and not one new mouth. Nothing. I got that piece from Chris @ Reefermadness. He said he had it for 2 years and nothing. If he wasn't exaggerating, thats 3 years without any growth.
If you want I could find a frag around here for you and ship it to you. PM me if you like.
wishntoboutside
12/30/2007, 03:57 PM
interesting note on the growth rates. I have seen very lil to none on some of mine while others are growing. Some that i fraged in the past healed great others receeded. It probably would take forever to get a full sized head growth. To some it up I find my hillae's inconsistant with everything but all like to eat at night.
Here's one I almost lost to PO4 problem; it is recovering now.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a289/icu_2/bowerbanki.jpg
lost this one to PO4 RIP... Candy apple red w/ green stripes. Good news is I did frag it before it went so there is hope for someday getting it again.

Can some care to explain what is "PO4"? I appreciate it.
Phosphate - I used ROWA and Phosban mix in a large GEO reactor and it lowered the PO4 to much to fast (~3 ppm to 0). LPS are more touchy on the rapid decline of PO4 whereas the SPS were happy in hours IME. Sadly, the it was too late for my bowerbanki.

Those both look like bowerbanki to me. If you look up a few pics at Montri's post, his 1st pic is bowerbanki and that 2nd pic is a hillae, IMO. You can see the polyp structure difference in those pics, to compare yours to.

I have a question ... do the bowerbanki's grow new skeleton or do they have to be placed on a rock and grow over it. Why I am asking is that a friend and I split a colony and we each have a larger piece and 2 frags each and are not sure how we work with them. Place them in the sandbed to grow or place them on a flat rock first and let them grow.
I'll try and get a photo posted of the original colony soon!
ct_vol

FWIW I have my colony in the sandbed, I have my frags in the rockwork... lol I feed the frags more often than the colony, so thats why they're in the rockwork so that I can reach them... :)

My guess would be more of the Acan Lord. If you look at the texture of the bowerbanki and hillae. You will notice significant differences between them and the acan lord. The bowerbanki is easier to tell. The texture resembles that of a pair of denim pants. The Hillae seems to show more of the spikey type texture the lords have. I think the thing that gives it a way is the fact that the coloration shown is more common in a lord than that of the hillae that are being imported. To me IMO. The stripping gives it away. Just my two cents.
