i was wondering if anyone has used just 1 150watt metal halide bulb in the middle of fixture with 24" t5 bulbs on each side of the halide. i have been looking to buy one but all the fixtures i see have 3 halides and the compaq flurecents.
i donmt have a canopy so i wanted a clean look.can i make one from a kit?has anyone one else designed any?how about somepictures i would liek to see. im trynig to stay under 600$ my tank is 72" long and 30" deep. im not going with hard corals just softys, and fish. i was thinking just 1 metal halide in the middle of my tank.

You have a 6' tank you should get the 3mh fixture. 1 mh bulb won't give much coverage in a tank that size. Why do you only want 1 mh light? If it's to save on electricity there is a decent T5 fixture here that fits your budget.

i think 3 MH would be too much heat. i fig 1 mh in the middle of the tank and t5 on the side would be nice.

I have the outer orbit with 3 150w mh and 8 t5's on my 180 lps and softie tank. My temp is set to 79 and goes up to 80.5 towards the end of the light cycle. I run the t5's from 9am to 9pm and the mh from 10:30am to 7:30pm. I currently have the fixture 3.5 inces from the surface but will be raising it to about 7" just for better tank access and that will also lower the temp some even though it really doesn't need it.
