ASM gate valve mod?

What is the purpose of this modification? Does it actually help? Can I run the pipe to my fuge for water supply to the fuge? Thanks for your replies.

the mod allows you to adjust water height in the skimmer by turning a valve instead of adjusting the riser pipe. You can adust w/o getting your hands wet and also control the water height more acurately. It takes about 10 minutes to do and is worth it.

I thought that was the trick. Looks like I will have a plumbing project over the weekend. I am looking to dump the water as a supply to my fuge. I am sure that this will work. Anyone?
