do i need a pump in 1a and 2a for pulse or can i have 1 pump in 1a and 1 in 1b, do i have to have 1 in each 1 and 2 outlets kinda confusing,i want to use night mode,also i have photo elec cell attatched to back wall of aquarium behind one of the lights ,is this ok,like where the light shines out from,it is behind the light on back wall of tank?

You need to have one pump in each channel to independently control the pumps. Knobs 1a and 1b both control channel 1 those are the two speeds that the pump pulses between and the same for 2a and 2b.

For the photocell it needs a fair amount of light usually to come out of night mode in night mode the pumps stay at the b settings and do not pulse.
