hello all, Im intersted in getting a PBT, so while doing research online I found websites stating these fish need a 55g or bigger. But I always see them in huge tanks, whats up with the site's info?
I saw the "55Gallon" for the PBT on more then 1 site.

Here is the recommended tank size for many species of Tang. Its 100g for a PBT.

I don't ever accept a fish sellers tank size recommendations without getting confirmation from others without a conflict of interest. Even the best retailers tend to give too small tank sizes. There are a lot more hobbyists out there with 55s than 180s. And they are trying to sell as many fish as possible...

yeah, these guys like to grow and like to swim. the last thing you want to do to a PBlue or Brown T is get them stressed. i have a 55 also and want PBlueT in the worst way but just not cool to the fish. hell, i even feel a heavy consciounce with my Foxface.

I understand how people want to keep tangs, they are way cool fish. Mine will eat from my hand. I have 5 in my system, they do need extra room. to live a stress free healthy life. I would say a minimum of 180 gallon.

We have a 4" kole, 4"-5" purple, 5" powder blue, 5' black and a 10" blue that was raised form a 1" juvenile.. also a foxface 8" and about 13-14 other fish...

They love the swimming area, I still feel sad sometime. they really need more room, now if I can just convince my wife...

Marine Center is horrible for their tank sizes. I have no respect for that company. IMO minimum 6 foot tank.

marinedepotlive.com is probably the best online store for tank sizes

Maximum Size: the Acanthurus leucosternon grows up to 10 inches.
General Size Specifications: The small size will come to you generally 1 to 2 inches; the medium generally 3 to 4 inches; the large generally 5 to 6 inches.
Minimum Tank Size: The Powder Blue Tang prefers a tank of at least 100 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim

I love the look of a power blue but i never even considered one for my 5 foot 112 gallon.

Because we have a 72g bow front with a medium size rock bed, we were thinking about getting one, There is PLENTY of room to swim. We are not for sure yet, just doing our research and trying to make the best decision.

Its not all about the total volume but has a lot to do with the length of the tank. As said above a 6 foot tank is really what they need. I have one in a 180 and he does swim coast to coast.

In talking about tank size no one ever talks about the size of the fish, if someone wanted to put a juvenile fish pbt in this case that is only 3" in a 55 wouldn't that be ok as long as they moved it to a larger tank when it grew to be 6"?

That is good in theory but most times people say this and intend to upgrade but the upgrade never comes. Life gets in the way and the money they thought they would have or the space they thought they would have don't come and then the fish is stuck in too small of a tank.

Tangs are so active and they swim fast!! Plus they can get aggressive. Better choice for a 4' tank would be a Kole.

Wow. That's a really nice tank and the pbt makes it even more beautiful.

I feel your pain. I really want a pbt but alas, I can't until I am able to set up my 300 g system and even then, it will be a long time after setup before the tank would be ready to house a pbt.
So until I get the total monies together, mr pbt will have to remain where he is.

Mine is in a 100 gal, 52" length tank. If I'm being honest he looks like he needs another foot or foot and a half of swimming room. Do I would say 5' minimum, 6' ideal. My tank is very open with lots of swimming lanes, but if he gets much bigger I may have to rehome. He is beautiful and healthy as an ox.
