Hello my US reefing chums

How much do you pay per polyp for a Rhizotrochus Typus?

I am in the UK and need to do some price comparisons.

Thanks

I have some AWESOME pics of mine :)

I cant post them though :(

Yes delight They still can bring that much! As with all corals just depends upon where and who yours comes from... they are still one of the more rare and sought after pieces

How hardy are these guys? A shipment of them came in at a local reef shop but they seemed to be in poor condition and I couldn't risk buying one and having it die.

Instead I bought a big dendro colony that I'm still waiting to open up lol.

I had a low pH problem in my tank that lead to cyano and dinos. I lost some zoas, and to this day i'm just starting to get the zoas back to healthy.

But I was scared for my Rhizo. It started to receed on the edges and never opened up. I continued to feed it by removing it from the tank in a bowl. I went to daily feedings. Slowely as my tank got turned around, so did the Rhizo. Now it is always open and the edges have grown back out. After this experience i would say they are very, very hardy corals.

Yep I've found mine to be very hardy.
It's often hard to tell if rhizos are healthy because they only open during the night.

Do they only open at night? I thought they were like dendros where they'd open slightly in the day and mostly at night.

During the day they're shrunken up and the skeleton is often visible through the tissue. At night they open up and look like the pics impur, racerw, and I have posted.

Sups Guys :) actually, My understanding is that they open and close as they please BOTH day and night :) Mine is open alot during the day BUT in agreeance it REALLY opens big at night ... Mine looks JUST like Stacies on the right...
NO I cannot get them :( about 6 mo ago I was offered 3 of them BUT LOL I didnt think that I could get the price to make the investment pay out LOL sometimes I impress myself with stupidity

Amazing looking coral, I've seen them in old posts and WISH I had one. Heard they are really large with long tentacles. I've never seen them in any LFS in my area. I've never seen a Dendro at a LFS in my area either, maybe I need to move to a new area :) anyone had success with them spawning. I think Jendub shows how they reproduce, I think that has a lot to do with the price of them also. They are from Japan correct?

I notice mine opens more when i haven't fed it in a week or so, and definately at night. Its suprising how long the tentacles can get. Freaked me out first time i saw it one night.

Is this related? They are small -- heads are about 3/4 inch and the polyps come out about an inch. A bunch came on my Caribbean rock .... don't know if you can see as they like the shade and my camera stinks.

My rhizo is about 1 inch head. I fed it every one month with fish or shrimp. This one is from Japan.

This one is about US$250 in Taiwan. I believe it will be cheaper in Japan.

I place the rhizo under rock's shadow. I use 2T5 daylight and 2 T5 actinics. The rizho still open more at night.

I think jendubs site says they reproduce very slowly and that they do so by producing eggs. I was trying to convince a RC member to break his and give me a piece lol but he didn't go for it. If I was him I wouldn't have either. Skydragon, where did he get his?

Question: if I went to japan and purchased a Rhyzo from a fish store, would I be able to bring it back to NY on the plane?

skydragon

answer your question Qckwzrd. my understanding you cant not bring any livestock back in plane. my buddy got his back in about 2-3year ago from a trade. i thing i may have a pic of the rhyzo befor and after it split. im gonna have to look for it i will keep it post to update geting. interesting...

Japan doesn't allow exportation of corals, why do you think japanese corals cost so much in the US. Whoever brought them risked going to JAIL for them.

Even if they did allow exportation you'd need a cites permit (cites.org)

They aren't all from japan that's for sure.
