any thoughts on what would be a good pump for my 180 perfecto? 1 inch supply and returns. i had a large pump at first and had to keep it way backed off with gate valve.

How many GPH are you looking for?

The best silent pump in the 1000-1500 gph area is the Velocity T4

I use one on my 260g & 1 on my 90g reef, totally silent!

the T4 is a very silent pump, but it is also quite the little heat pump as well and has been know by many users to raise the temp of their tanks multiple degrees. This could be an issue if you live in a warm area and do not have a chiller. Typically 1" bulkheads are good for 600 gph or a bit more. You will obviously loss some flow from your return pump through head pressure. My personal choice would be the oceanrunner 6500. It is rated at 1700 gph but you can bet that after head pressure it's going to be much lower cause it isn't a pressure rated pump. It can be run external with no issues. Like you said you can always valve it down if needed. It's very energy efficient at 95 watts and is also economical at 119.99 at drsfostersmith.com.
