i just received 3 new temp probes to replace my old ones .. the new ones all are MUCH larger, and have a rubber cap on the probes end - this rubber cap seems very tight fitting, are we to pull it off when the probe is in use, or leave in on?

thanks,

marco

none of the other 2 generation temp probes i had received from neptune sys ever had a rubber cap on, not that i recall ... i pulled it off on one probe. seems alright ... there were NO instructions as to weather leave, or removing it.

Curt,

Just rinse it off, and put it in the tank. Leave the cap on.

ok, i put it back on, but i'm wondering why the cap? isn't rubber more of an insulator?

I am just guessing but I suspect it may be to give a little protection to the sensor so it doesn't get cracked internally.

Again, just a guess.

Marco,

Though the cap may act as more of an insulator, it will not be a total isolator. That is, it will still allow the transfer of heat across its boundary and not be a thermal shield. It will just take a bit longer (maybe only a minute or two?) because rubber/plastic isn't really that good of a thermal insulator. I doubt it will make any noticable difference and would go ahead and leave it on (or put it back in this case).
