Looked through all those Softies tank shots, eveything colorful seems to be the LPS and Anenomes in there. Most of the tanks with all softies are just brown other than the fish swimming around. Is there any colorful softies other than the Chili corals and non-photo synthetic Gorgonians?

Some green sinularia are actually *quite* green; you have to track down a good specimen. Also, Fiji toadstool leathers are bright yellow, very cool. Green star polyps come immediately to mind as well. Oh, and there are orange, green, blue, purple, striped, spotted, etc mushrooms. If you've got $'s you can totally go crazy with Ricordea species. Zoanthids come in every conceivable color.

That ought to get you started :)

green stars, briareum (which is a type of gsp), i've got some blue/green clove polyps...i've also got some clove polyps that are mostly purpleish and then the streaks in the middle are turquise and then as they go out further turns to a very nice bright orange.

you can find any color of zoanthid you can think of...

I had a very very nice fiji yellow leather, and i also had a very bright neon green toadstool leather (along w/a pretty gold toadstool, not the normal brown).

Then there's mushrooms...pretty much like zoas...lots o' color. um...blue xenia, and i know i had a bunch more colorful softies than i can remember. Then again, i had a lot of just normal stuff, but i had really nice lights so everything looked way better than normal....so IMO, get really nice lights first, then all your stuff will color up great, even if it normally isnt colorful.

What's wrong with brown corals?

Most corals are brown.

I don't understand this obsession with brightly-colored corals. Shouldn't we be striving for healthy corals, in tanks that look at least somewhat naturalistic?

I also like to add some come colors in the drab life - mine and my tanks :D
White xenia:

Red mushrooms (could be green and violet):

Green star polyps, as already was said - love them.

And LPS, but really bright, neon-green candycane:
http://thumb1.webshots.net/t/53/753/3/93/47/2986393470081040121oGIFQB_th.jpg (http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2986393470081040121oGIFQB)
LPS again, expensive, grow big - up to 8", but could be really bright - red, green, striped: scolymia, cynarina, blastomussa welsii. As long as there is only 1 mouth to feed - no troubles at all, and they make a large splsh of color.

My green tree had a nice green color as mentioned before ,even better under the actinics!
If You want rainbow colors you might want to try some zoanthids, mushrooms and LPS's.

Well, if I wanted brown I would have just gottena fresh water tank, so thanks for your thoughtful reply. As for colors, I have some Green Sinularia and lots of zoas, just wondered what other softies had some colors, I like the swaying in the water look of the softies, just wish there is one that might looked like a RBTA without the moving about and splitting.

Timanator,

I didn't mean to diss you. And it was a "thoughtful reply," believe it or not :)

One of the great things about this hobby is that there are so many choices. Some people are fascinated by SPS and the fact that they are reef-building, some don't care and just want the brightest-colored corals they can find. Some are intrigued by the latest Acans and Rics.

I just think it's great that we've gotten so good at keeping corals that we can make these choices.

And I couldn't live without my Neon GSPs!

It's called "SPS" :p (ok I'll shut up now...)

I think most shrooms are colorful, especially under actinics.

There are a lot of nice greens and yellows, but if you get into carnations and other Dendros they cane be insanely colored.

There's lots of "brown" soft corals, but there's also a lot of "brown" SPS. You should go diving sometime because a lot of reefs around the world are "brown".

If you want to have a full color spectrum of corals you need to look for more rare type items or popular one's that have lots of color. Here's some ric's I have that aren't the norm that add color:

I will have to do some research on those types. Are they hard to come by? Do they cost just an arm or both an arm and a leg?

Once I get my camera back from the shop, I'll post some picks of my green sinularia. I was fortunate enough to get 4 good frags about 3 months ago and they are doing well. I like them a lot and recommend getting some if you come accross them. They add great color to the tank.
