View Full Version : Would a pH of 6.2 be harmful to my reef?

My probe is reading low 6 for pH even with calibration. My salifert pH kit is reading about 8. But I heard of problems with salifert kits lately (not sure if it was pH or something else...)

Corals and fish behaving normally.

Yes at 6 everything would be dead due to being acidic.

There is something wrong with your probe I would think. Coral skeleton and aragonite would start dissolving at that Ph level. Well, in a calcium reactor anyways.

Your probe has likely gone bad

If the reading is truly 6ish, thats a 100 times more acidic than aquarium water should be and I would guess that would be pretty bad for your animals over the long run. I think that your reading must be wrong though. Try a different ph test.

If that is the true reading, your tank just turned into one big calcium reactor. I'd check with another tes kit.

Thanks guys... first time ever with a pH probe. So I'll look into it more. I'm looking at the 6.2 - 6.3 reading and watching my tangs and all my fish begging for food.... coral growth improving etc etc...

I believe the only salifert test with known issues was alkalinity. As far as I've heard, all others are ok.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

As long as it is calibrated for both 7.01 and 10.01 and it is still reading wrong, it's the probe. Probes generally last two years at the most from what I have read. Good luck!

Check out this common ph table. See where your tank would fall?

Never host a frat party if you have a reef tank.

...wait.... I shouldn't do water changes with Urine?

I thought because I was at 8.6 id want to drop it a bit.

Is urine a no no?
