Why are these SOOOOO Expensive?

TZ1360 Tunze Turbelle Pump/Powerhead 7200/2 132–634 23.6–51.1 5-13 3.9 x 3.5 $216.63 @ MarineDepot

Are they meant to be this expensive. because i was considering one of these until saw the price...

They have the same electronic control system as the 6000 Stream, in fact it is basically a 6000 Stream running an impeller instead of a propeller. They run on low voltage with electronically variable speed control. Such pumps are expensive regardless of manufacturer, they are fairly complicated technically, the only other company I know that makes such a pump is AquaBee and the price is comparable.

The 7400/2 is the better choice, it is stronger and better suited to handle head pressure. If you download the 2008 catalogue on tunze.com and look at page 24 and 25 you will see that 7200/2 and 7400/2 will soon be replaced by one model 5001 with a switchable power supply. Page 25 describes a modification to boost head pressure specifically for use as a return pump, with this mod the flow is reduced- max 475gph at 0ft but head pressure is greatly increased to nearly 20ft. As is a 7400/2 or 5001 at full power max head pressure is about 8ft but max flow is 1250gph. At about 5ft the flow rates overlap, when you need to pump up more than 5ft use the mod, less than 5ft don't. The flow curve of the modded pump is very flat, the flow curve of the unmodded pump drops sharply with a flow rate of about 400gph at 5ft.
