What is the eggcrate on the back for? Is it just to support the rock/corals or to keep it off the glass?

The egg crate is what i used for the background. I zipped tied rubble to it making a rock wall. Then i pulled it about 3-4 in from the back for the over flow and skimmer . and it also makes a cryptic zone and and in tank fuge
