I was thinking of placing two Koralia 1 Circulation Pumps in my 40g reef tank. would this be effective/not enough/or too much flow?

I would think you would want more flow. What are you trying to keep?

Not enough flow, especially if you are keeping SPS. I have two #3s in my 75G reef tank (SPS, LPS & softies) and I am getting ready to add a MaxiJet 1200 w/mod kit to get more flow. I also have one #2 in my 29G long tank and the flow is adequate (LPS and softies).

The Koralias are great powerheads and Hydor's customer service is excellent. The only problem is the flow is very wide and dissipates within a short distance.

IMO, if you have SPS go with two #3s, no SPS, two #2s or a #2 and a #3.

atleast 3's, I would say two 3's would work well. The 2's arent much better than the 1's. I have two 1's in a 28g and they are decent, but my tank is a foot shorter tahn yours.

I have a 3 and a 1 in my 54, and I might like a little more flow, but I can't imagine two 3's in a 40 gallon - that would be some major flow IMO, I don't think I'd want so much.

I kinda like having the two different koralias, because there isn't a lot of room from one side to the other in my corner bowfront, so this allows there to be an area of "low to medium flow."

I think you will regret going with just 1's. When you first start it up, it seems like a lot of flow, but within a week or so you'll be wishing it was more.

I have a 1 and a 2 in a 55 gal. I wish I had more flow. Should have probably gone with two 3's.

No to the adjustable flow question.

I've got 2 K3's in a 55 gal. along with a little Rio on a timer. I like the high flow, but I'm preparing an SPS tank. The Koralia's have a strong but gentle flow. You can tone them down by not adding the deflector or pointing them more toward the surface, which is great for oxygen exchange. I would recommend the 3's in a 40 gal. unless you're going to be keeping seahorses or something.

It is perfect for that size tank. I have one in a 58, works great, about to get one more to help push water along the other side as well down lower.
