Anyone running Tunze 9010 skimmer on a 120+ gal setup?

I have a 120 gal tank + 40 gal sump. I was going to use a Tunze 9010 until someone notify me it couldn't handle that tank size.

My plan for this tank is a mix reef tank with a few fishes.

Please let me know if you are using / have used 9010.
How big is your tank?
Are you happy with 9010?
Is it good enough for your tank size?

I run a 9010 on a 65 gallon and it skims well. However I believe the next step up in the Tunze line might be my choice with a tank the size of yours.

I believe it is around a 100.00 dollars more and a little taller. Looks like a larger cup and I am sure a step up in the pump.

I have one on a 37 with a 10 gallon sump.

So far I've had it for a little over a month and I'll tell you what, the air stone skimmer I was using on my 20 produced more skim then this thing...I've tried to adjust it both wet and dry and I get the same results. close to nothing.

one thing I really hate about it, it the way it's put together... it's made of cheap this plastic that snaps in place to hold it together..it's not what you'd expect for the money they charge for this thing...the other day I took it apart to clean it, another part that was glued in place came out with the pump..I think for the money you can buy a much better skimmer IMO.

One more thing. If you have an issue with it and you vent a little frustration about the product Tunze has only one guy in the U.S. taking care of everything..rub him the wrong why and you will get no help.

The 9015 is the same skimmer aside from the cup..for the extra 100 all you get is a bigger cup with a longer riser tube.

This is correct. It allows you to open the air valve all the way. With the 9010 if its functiong properly you can not use all the air that the pump is pulling in.
I have a 9010 and will have a second soon and it skims well even though I dont think its big enough for a 120.

My 9010 left over from my 75 was on my 120 for 2 months.

It was not enough skimmer.

I just replaced with DAS EX-2. Very nice skimmer.

This is what is supposedly true, but everyone Ive heard of who actually has a 9010 (including me) has it all the way open. I have it on a 125 and its not enough. I think it would be good on a 75g or less tank.

I also had a 9010 on a 50 with the air full open. I was not impressed and generally had a lot of issues with it. I now have a ER RS80 and like it (and the skimate) much better.

That being said, the "one guy" that does the Tunze stuff in the USA was always real good with helping me troubleshoot or replace parts. No issues there :)

I run the 9010 on my 210 gallon FOWLR and i'm emptying the cup (close to 500 ml ) every 2-3 days. It sits inside my tank.


I think by far it is the best skimmer that I own. I have the blue screw open about 6 full turns and my water lever is over the blue level line and almost all the way up to the edge of the skimmer itself.

I also have the 9005 on my 56 tall reef. It took a while for me to find a setting I liked but I took the water level up past the blue line and it seems to produce more skimmate. The cup gets half full every 2 days.


I think that this skimmer would be more affective if it sits inside the tank so it could utilize more water inside of it trying to draw more air and water sitting in a sump.

Another alternative is the foam extraction unit. It includes a hose to allow foam to drain into a container. This also allows you to open the Venturi wider.

I have one on a smaller tank, and two of my friends have them on tanks ranging between 75 and 220g

If I open mine all the way up it floods the cup. Something is not right with your skimmer. Check the venturi inlet tube. Some of them the hole was to large and pulled in water.

I ran a 9015 on my 120 and it wasn't enough, the 9020 that I have now makes a big difference.

I can run mine all the way open as well on my 9010, still works good. Didnt roger say something about adding teflon tape to seal it real good?

I think they replace it for free. My first one didnt need anything but the second does, I just scored a third and the previous owner got a new on from tunze. It also will flood the cup if opened all the way. With that one I'm going to lengthen the cup so it can run wide open.

I saw roger reply to a person in the Tunze forum about wrapping it in teflon until he got the part in that roger sent him. I just did mine, and this time when it started it made a little squeal when it started like air pulling through something. Also it is gurgling now without the screw in as opposed to not guggling before I added the tape.

If it worked as good as it did before doing that, and the teflon sealed it better, I cant wait to see what it will do now.

About how long does it take for it to overflow the cup if you open it all the way and after just turning it on?

I'm not too worried about getting a new part for it, the tape seems to be fine.

Not long I can fill mine almost instantly. If you can put tape on it then it was to big. It should have been a tight fit. I dont know when they started having this issue. I got all of mine used and they are all different ages.

I glued a 3.5 inch pvc coupling to the neck of my 9010 collection cup. This allows me to open up the air fully and I get more skimmate collected quicked. It cost me $3.00 and a little bit of weld-on 16:) Much better than $100!

nice, so it's pretty much a perfect fit? One guy posted that he did it with a piece of acrylic he got from somewhere, I may do it if I dont find anyone selling the 9015 cup cheap. The only thing is it won't be able to collect as much, but I clean my every other day so that wont be an issue anyways.
