I keep mine @ 1.024... I was wondering if it would be okay to keep it lower like 1.019 ........
what do you keep yours at and is it for any particular reason?

When we had corals in it, we kept the tank at 1.024, but since we've gotten rid of most of the corals, we keep it around 1.020/1.021. Mostly to save a little money on salt, and the fish are doing fine with the lower salinity.

I keep mine at 1.023.....I don't think it would bother fish to keep it a little lower, but I worry about the snails and crabs going lower. Maybe someone knows the answer here.

I used to keep mine at 1.023, but now I do 1.025.
I think my skimmer works better at higher sg, but it could just be in my head.

The skimmer will work slightly better at higher SG's. It increases the surface tension allowing for better bubble formations.

I keep mine at 1.023. Has worked for me for a long time so I just stick with it.

1.025 here. Slightly better skimmer performance and closer to natural sea levels (I have a lot of invertebrates in the tank).

skimmer works better at higher s.g.
fish have adapted biologically to 1.025
"correct" levels will lead to more stable pH
the amount you actually safe on salt isn't that much (in my view)
..... all in, I don't really see the point in keeping it lower.... during aclimatisation, yes, but ultimately it will not do the fish any favours.....
Just my toughts........ why not do a quick calcualtion and see how much you think you'll save..... then if you think the savings justify it, tehn why not.... thousands of people do (though most of the expereinced long term sucessful guys don't).

okay, i do appreciate everyone's info and view.
However I never mentioned anything about doing it to save a small amount of salt. My fishes health is worth so much more on the couple of dollars, if that, per bucket that I would actually save.
I was interested inlowering my salinity to help control any parasites or things like that.

1.026. Don't see how 1.026-1.019 would affect parasites very much. Love the skimming from my EV-180 though!
