i am new to salt and reef keeping i have a 20 gallon high i am going to use as my first salt tank. I think i am going to go FOWLR for the first 6 months to a year to get the hang of keeping salt water.

my questions are what do i really need? hob skimmer lights how many wattage?
sand what kind? anything i need to know i have a book on nano reefs but i am not yet ready for a reef. I have been keeping fresh water fr years and just now starting to get into the salt.

I had a 20H for some time and it was great. I did not have a skimmer. I chose to have a fuge. This worked out great. There is a thread here somewhere on how you can make one from an AC500.

I would get a sunpod. Yes, I know expensive, but when you get bit by the coral bug then you want lots of different kinds of coral. With a sunpod (150w) you can have basically anything. I had everything from SPS to softies to clams.

Books: The New Marine Aquarium By Paletta & The Nano Reef Handbook by Brightwell. I would the the one by Paletta if I had to chose, it is more basic and straight forward.
