I have an 8 gallon glass hex tank that I've been wanting to make into a nano tank for a while but I've been brain storming about how to make it work for a while.... I want to have an overflow on it but make it 360 degrees viewable. Originally I was thinking if I put a a 2" bulkhead right in the middle of the bottom then I could have a 2" diameter overflow right up the middle of the tank and run a 1/2" return line through the middle of it, but then I realized this would be noisy as hell. I just don't see a way to fit a durzo inside of a central overflow without making it huge, and the tank is only 12" from any side to the other.

Does it sound like I'm wasting my time and should just drill one pane and put an overflow on that side?

I agree. With an 8 gallon tank you would need very little flow. I think you could fit a big enough hoffer type drain and a small return inside a 2 or 2 1/2" overflow.
