What is a ok amount of nitrates??

It depends on what you keep in the tank. Many aquarists will recommend a level of zero or below 10 if keeping sensitive invertebrates and coral. In a fish only tank acceptable levels are higher as fish are able to withstand a higher concentration of nitrates. Basically - the lower the better, but anything under 20 is OK.

ok what I have is about 30 ppm. Tha tank is a mixed reef but everything seems to be doing good. I am going to do a 10% water change 2morow and I have a jar of nitrate sponge. So I will put in sump for a couple of days. Sound good?

If the animals are doing well, I wouldn't worry very much. 30 ppm of nitrate might cause problems for stony corals, but most other animals, including fish and soft corals, will be fine.
