Make a canopy as a regular rectangular/square box. Leave the wave front section opened? No wood would cover this small section and would be an asset to leave open for feeding. The canopy would set on the tank frame as in traditional canopies. Let the wood come down over the ends of the tank framing and do this for the back too to help secure it. The only problem I see with doing this is the canopy could slide back as there is nothing to secure it to the front.
You could also make a box and secure the lights inside and then suspend it from the ceiling. If you have the stand that comes with it there is a chrome finish on it. I would paint or finish the this box in chrome to match the chrome on the stand. This would approach would probably be the easiest.
I'll try to draw a diagram up for you and post it tomorrow night. I'll use the scanner at work.
I like the looks of the wave tank as it is unique and different and very modern looking compared to the traditional tanks most of us have.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I hope this helps and will post a diagram tomorrow evening if I can get it to attach.

Look at the right pic from the pic you attached. The traditional canopy you would make could sit on the tank like the standard flourscent tube fixtures do, but wood would come over the trim on each end of the tank to make it more secure. The front wavy part of the tank would be exposed like the pics.

You could suspend the light over the tank and build a box for the lights. Like a retro kit

If you have the means to do it yourself, you could easily get wood to bend to that shape. But, you would have to have anchor points along the width to nail/screw into so it would keep it's shape. I'm also not sure what you would do about a frame piece. However, the front panel itself could surely be made. If you do not have the means to do this yourself, you can probably find an experienced woodworker that could knock that out in no time.
Where did you get a wood stand that matches the curves?

Pendants.
Thin formica will bend like that, no problem. Trace top. Make a frame of light pine, glue formica to frame, leave top open, with corner braces, do a sit-on L [upside down] at corners, significant bends, crossbracing to enable canopy to sit on tank top. Will support light kit or 2 slanted light kits in tandem.
Or if you get your lfs to go back to the company, I'm betting you can order the canopy...for a significant amount of money.

He wants a wood tone to match his stand. Instead of formica you can use wood vanere once you get the template of the wave made. I think it would have to be treated to protect it. I bet the company that sells the aluminum canopy might also have wood ones.
