I would tend to believe that it would depend on the sps. There was a video on here a while back that showed a whole field of stags out of water on low tide.

Well it's only exposure during extreme low tides mostly on very warm bright days which cause the most damage in nature. So if your emptying large quantities of water out of a reef tank exposing corals to air just don't run lighting and you should be fine. I've exposed a large stag which has grown towards the top of the tank for around ten minutes. No ill effects. There's a youtube video out there where a guy frags out an entire wild colony and gosh he kept it exposed to air so long I was cringing. There are resilient acros and some may actually benefit from being removed from the water because of the sliming and consequent shedding of bacteria.

I did my normal weekly water change last night 15 Gal out of a 120. I have a Green slimer right at the water level when the tank is full with a baby blue stag just below the slimer. When I remove the 15 Gal 4"-5" of the slimer is exposed 2"-3" of the blue stag and an 1" or so of my green w/purple rim cap. They are all exposed for 15-20 mins. During that time I do keep my lights and fan off no reason to add extra stress or drying agents.
We always show great concern, just because we put down a lot of love, effort and $$$. The below link is a short video clip shows what happens in Fiji. Enjoy it.

Coral is sensative, but in no way is weak. :)
BTW, try not to touch them directly.

They're fine out of water. I always just leave my actinics on when doing a water cange because my MH's are about 6" off the water and I don't want my corals to bake under halides if I can avoid it.

Due to a plumbing malfuntion (murphys law strikes again) my frag tank was completely dry for about 4 hours. All of my SPS were fine except for my birdsnests. They all RTN'd within a day.

I expose about 10 " of mty tank during water changes for upwards of 30 minutes at a time. My SPS and even my trumpet coral(though a bit slimy and irritated) do fine and I have never lost a single thing.
