I recently stirred a portion of my 5 year old 2-3" deep sand bed to dicover it is full of black stuff, that rose into the water column. Is this healthy or in need of attention.

Did any bubbles come out with it? If so it could be Hydrogen Sulfide, and when stirred up in a DSB can be detrimental to water quality. Your sand shouldn't be deep enough to have a real problem unless it's really compacted by the LR and there are spots of low flow and that no creatures are around to stir the sand up and oxygenate it.

No air bubbles released. And there are some areas under some of the live rock cave areas that don't get alot of flow and as far as creatures to stirr the sand I don't have any.
