putting m. mud ontop of sand

in my fuge I currently have about 2 inches of sand and was wonering if I could put some m. mud ontop of it.
Also why do I have to replace the mud after 2 years?

The mud won't do any harm as long as the flow level is low enough. :) The manufacturers claim that the mud needs to be replaced because the added nutrients leach out of it after some time. I wouldn't bother replacing it, personally. I wouldn't even use it unless I was trying to grow a few true plants that need such a substrate.
