Some use a wet dry vac. I just suck it out with a siphon

I use a wet dry vac. It helps to get all the detridus out of it.

Wet-Dry user here as well. It helps with the water change process too.

I cleaned mine today using a length of small-diameter plastic tubing. I just siphon the water into a bucket, and run the end of the hose along the bottom of the sump. It picks up detritus and stray bits of chaeto, but the suction isn't strong enough to pull out the bits of rubble or shells that are strewn about here and there (I find the sump a convenient place to store a few spare shells for hermits and rubble for fragging). I've only got a 30g sump -- if you've got something much larger, a different method such as a Python water changer or wet/dry vac might work better.

Python I have left over from freshwater days.
