First question
is it ok to use a soft toothbrush to help get algae growth off my sponge? I dont want to damage or kill him.

Second is for an identification
I describe this thing as looking like a dime size chunk of yellow snot (sorry for the description!) I see no head or "feelers". It is nocturnal and when I wake, he is at the top of the water level. Once the light comes on, he disappears very quickly. Unfortunately I havent seen him move because I turn away and he is gone. I'll have to sit by the tank next time and wait him out. Here are a couple of pics...hopefully good enough...

live sponge? no, it would kill the sponge---possibly it would reproduce it, too, but I wouldn't. Just let nature take its course.

If you want to get the best of algae, set up a fuge: no scrubbing, no fuss: the stuff just starves to death.

the yellow thing looks like a flatworm to me. You're gonna want to suck that feller out.

Turn on the macro setting on your digital camera!

(*it's a bit too blurry to tell, but it does look like a flatworm)

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Believe it or not, that is on the macro setting. His location made it very difficult for me to get a good close up.
