okay so i have a 10 gallon freshwater tank with one fish which i am taking back to the fish store(tired of freshwater fish), so i want to start a fuge in it but is it okay not to have it connect to the sump or tank i just want to have it as a seperate tank and will shake some copepods off the chaeto when i need them. if i can do this what lights should i use and could i use the filter from the freshwater with out any filter pads in it to keep flow going?

Uh... let me get this right. You want a Refugium but not connect it to your DT? Why have cheato then? Cheato is a macro algae used to absorb excess nutrients so that algae growth is slowed in the DT. Some LR and rubble would be fine for pod developement.

Basically you just want a 10g saltwater tank. I don't know much about nano skimmers... but there are some. Maybe do a search for nano skimmers. CPR might make one. You could put an AquaFuge 2 small version on the back of your tank for an acutal fuge for the 10g tank. That would be cool. They make them with a skimmer attached. Google AquaFuge 2... find the one with the skimmer.

Oh... you mentioned lights too. Umm... is a 10g 20" long? If so, how bout a Current Satellite PC fixture? Those are nice looking, and would be all you need.

Run a bakpak or aquafug2, aquafug would be cool, and maybe a med sized hang-on filter with carbon or filter floss. If you want coral, get a 96w quad PC.
I love small tanks, or nanos, but they are much harder than a med. sized salt water tank. It is easier to start with like a 40 gallon.
Find a nano club or website and talk with them.

Well why would you want a refugium if you're not going to plumb it to your existing tank? What are you providing a refugium for exactly?
