View Full Version : White polyped Montipora?

There's the tyree M. undata, and the "Leng Sy cap", and also this cool nodosa-like orange encruster from Rommel:

Tropicana Twister Monti (http://www.ultimatefrags.com/coralinfo.php?ID=68#coral)

Does anyone know of any other Montipora out there with white polyps? If so, post some pics!

I bought this frag from Fragglereef.com. It was sold to me as a snowflake monti nodosa. Compared to the photo on Rommels site, it looks completely different, as the one looks much more red than orange. Very well could be the same coral though depending on lighting. Its got a bright orange base with white polyps. Really pretty piece. I am looking forward to it being a lot bigger than it is. It has been a slow grower though, but has really been coming on strong as of late.

That does look different, almost like a sunset type monti with white polyps. The polyps are much denser than the one from Rommel. I've got the "Tropicana Twister" and it seems to be a good grower, maybe we can arrange a trade down the road...

I saw M. undata thrown out there so I thought I would take this opportunity to post a little gratuitous eye candy of this pic I took a coupla weeks ago.

That is gratuitous. I don't have much green on mine yet, but it seems to be growing good.

I got one that looks just like the tropicana twister from Dr. Mac, it is called starry night I think. It's colors are pretty bleached from shipping, when it colors up I'll post some pics.

Those green with purple rim Undata polyps look like a light mint green to me, not really white. The couple of undata's I've seen in person also had light mint green polyps...............nothing like the pure white polyps of the Leng Sey.

So, which is it or do they vary? The one's I saw in pesron were "the" LE undata.

I have a frag of a true "leng sy" cap that in the donors tank has white polyps with a purple fringe. However, in my tank under my 10K XMs it has mint green polyps and the purple fringe has never appeared.

I would definitely call the polyps white on my undata, probably the purest white in the tank. It's under Ushio 10k with 2 t5 actinics though, so it's not loaded with blue light.

The montipora above had really white polyps to begin with but it is currently growing under blue-heavy bulbs so they appear more mint-green, especially around the growing margin.

I have 1 of Rommel's Tropicana Twister Monti's and after a few weeks, it does color right back up to the way his site shows. I'll try to get a pic later today and post it. Fast grower too.

About 16-18" below 250 watt Radiums on Icecap Ballast. When I first got it, the polyps were on the grey side.

I've got the Tropicana Twister about 16" under 250W 10k Ushio and it looks a lot like the photo on his website also. Maybe a bit more orange than red.

Not in the same catagory as all these pictures of the undata, but here's my white digitata, been this way for quite a few years.

Sorry about the blurriness but my acrylic tank is scratched to hell!

sfsuphysics

Therman unfortunately no, but it branches just like any digitata, what you're seeing is just the puddle of the colony I started (it would be bigger, but between the algae and monti eating nudibranchs I have had to deal with I'm lucky to still have it), and if you look closely in the middle you can see where a piece broke off (the one that Mr. Ugly has actually! :D), and the other nub on there is another piece that broke off. I have had the worst luck with getting the rock that this is on, to stay attached to my rockwork and some snail or urchin always has a tendency to knock it over and pop off comes any branches... real PITA keeping this thing going! however now I put it in a place where nothing can wedge between (I hope) and break it off... so we'll see what it does now.

therman
02/11/2008, 04:13 PM
Yes it does seem like some frags are cursed like that doesn't it? :) Hope it does well for you. I have nightmares about monti nudis, had a few twice, think I controlled them, but every bare spot on a monti sends me into a paranoid superglueing frenzy now.

Not sure if I even want to trade frags any more. I think the best bet is to only add freshly cut frags and superglue over everything but perfect undamaged tissue.

I bought a small tiny frag that looks the same off a local guy. He warned me it was his slowest grower and he wasn't kidding... in the past year went from the size of a dime to now maybe a penny. I love the colors, wish it would grow.

I had a hard time getting a shot in-focus...

Well lets see where it is, this is a thread that's over a year old :D

Here's an updated picture of my "snowflake" (the original link location apparently has gone). While some polyps look blue, that's because that is partially shaded from the halides, and it's blue T5s that are the only thing shining on it, you can see the white polyps on the left however where it's no longer shaded from the halides..and strange there's such good growth there :D
